Chirp....chirp....chirp

Yes, yesterday's Wordless Wednesday picture is a picture of our newest additions. One thing I was so excited about when we moved into this house was the potential to keep chickens for eggs. I thought it was something we would work toward doing next year. The other day Kev and I were out at our barn/shed (it's really like two shed buildings put together but it looks like a barn) talking about how we could put a coop in there. As we talked I realized that it's not going to take much at all to make it work.

We have plans to turn one corner into the coop with nesting boxes. In the side of the barn we will put a little door into the coop. There is more than enough room for a chicken yard but we are going to start small, so that we can enclose the top of it. Later we can build something fancier. But for now we have to be sure we can cover it since there is a gigantic barn owl that lives in the neighborhood. ;)

There were some things we needed to run out for so we decided to stop at the farm/ranch store to price stuff and see what chicks they had. Since they have to be in the brooder for 60 days we went ahead and got them and will begin working on the coop so it's done when they are ready to be out there.

We are praying that we have more hens than roosters! The city ordinance says you can have chickens but no rooster. So if we end up having any roosters we will have to give them away.

We have two budgies, and the female has laid 6 eggs in the last couple weeks. We keep joking that it's too bad she's not a chicken... LOL

The place we're renting has a chicken coop, and we hoped we could care for the chickens the last owners were leaving behind, but without dogs here, the racoons just slaughtered the chickens. :( It was sad, and we're reluctant to try again.

My husband is wanting to get chickens next year. Can't wait to hear what your experience with them is like. :)
