Yes, we are still fairly snowed in. I say "fairly" because we have been out a couple times.
It's scary out there.
Thursday afternoon I helped shovel a path to the street. There were a couple trucks in the neighborhood and one came up to our driveway. They were helping to make tire tracks in driveways so people could get out easier. So he drove forward and back a couple times which helped some. We still had to do the edges of our driveway in order to have clearance turning in. We made it out and took a trip to Target (which just happens to have a Starbucks in it!!). The roads from here to there weren't too bad. Mostly snow packed. Target was pretty deserted. But it was nice to get out and walk around somewhere.
Yesterday I went to do an interview in south Tulsa. Not long after I left it started snowing. I managed to get where I needed to be after maneuvering through town. There are a couple good-sized hills on the way so I had to drive out of my way to get around them. The roads in Tulsa were/are HORRIBLE!!!!!! By the time I left it was snowing pretty heavily.
I managed my way back the other way and stopped by a bread store to see if by any chance they had any bread. Most stores are completely out of things like milk, bread, cheese, eggs, meat, etc. Because they have done a piss-poor job clearing the roads (including highways) since the storm on TUESDAY, suppliers are having a hard time getting to the stores. I digress.....all they had left was "whole wheat white" bread (*shudder*). I went ahead and got a couple loaves just in case I couldn't find more at the grocery store.
Then I decided that while I was out I would grab some groceries. That turned into a full-fledged weekly grocery shopping trip. Supposedly we are getting more "wintery mix" tomorrow into Monday and then another snow storm on Wednesday. This way I don't have to get back out over the weekend and we are good for groceries for the week. I chose WalMart because I figured being a large store they would have a good selection and I also didn't want to overpay at Reasor's (a local grocer). This was the milk case at WalMart (and the empty egg case if you can see it around the lady who turned the corner as I was taking the picture):
I managed to get all that I needed except milk and lunchmeat (I should have snapped a pic of that case!!) for meals through Friday.
After I started making dinner I realized I needed more refried beans. yay. So off I went to Reasor's. When I pulled up, I saw this:
YAY!! After following the delivery back to the dairy case (along with about ten other people..lol) I scored two gallons of milk. They also had lunch meat.
What is just a little bit worrisome is.....this is only a snowstorm. The city was completely unprepared, grocery suppliers are having trouble making deliveries, we haven't had mail service all week, when people are shopping they are acting like they will never be able to get food again, etc. What if this was a major natural disaster or an attack of some sort?? Scary. It's spurred me just a bit to really step up being prepared. I need to re-inventory our medical supplies (I have a bag that I keep things in so that I could just grab one bag and have essentials), buy a little extra each week (I found THIS blog that has a really helpful shopping list), etc.
And with that...I'm off to clean the kitchen after our super, yummy, delicious breakfast....
Then I think we'll round up all the spray bottles I can find, fill them with colored water, and go make our yard the most colorful in the neighborhood! ;)

boy Heather, you DO lead an interesting life. I too,am amazed at how quickly we humans panic when we can't get a few groceries. I guess Glenn Beck is right when he says to,"stock up"
