Guess what tomorrow is!!!! :)

If you think of it, please pray for our brother-in-law. Some of you in the area may have seen the story about the fatal fire in Broken Arrow. That was our brother-in-law's neighbor. Here is a link to the story: Overnight House Fire Claims Man's Life

We had Kevan's parents over last night. They were still without power and were running out of firewood. So they came to eat and spend the night. Thankfully their electricity came back on today!

I've rediscovered Facebook and am having a blast!!!! I have come across so many old friends! I signed up for it quite a while back and never really did anything with it. Apparently I've been living in the dark ages because there's a big Facebook world out there! lol

So...come January I want to make some changes in our schooling. Do you know how many times I've done that? But this time I mean it. lol We really need more structure in our day and I'm going to try REALLY hard to not get discouraged if we don't follow that structure.

The first order of business is to get a new baby gate (unless Kevan can rig up our broken one). I need Matthew to nap or have a quiet time longer than one hour! I have tried pulling out toys only when we're doing school but his attention span is about five minutes long and then he is climbing on the dining room benches or being really loud. With a working baby gate I can tell him to have a Quiet Time and keep him contained a while longer.

Next on my list is trying to come up with a daily schedule. I'm not really sure how to do this so if any of you wise homeschooling Mamas have any ideas...bring 'em on! I would like to try having set times for subjects. You know, 15 minutes for Spelling, 20 minutes for English, etc. Then anything not done in that time is completed after dinner. BUT how do you do that when you have multi-age kids and the younger gets done before the older one? Abby is usually done before Emily. So if I say Spelling starts at 1:00 and there is 15 minutes to do the page, if Abby gets done in 5 minutes do I have her go on to the next subject and keep track of her time? Do you just have each child keep track of their time?

I would also like to add Book Reports, a small writing assignment (like a journal entry) and Critical Thinking to their daily assignments. They'll be thrilled. ;)

I think that's all the fantabulous updates from me today. Off to play with my Facebook some more. :)

When I make up my schedule, I don't add times. You never know what is going to happen in your day, so its easier to just list everything that needs to be done that day in the order they need to be done and then just check them off. When you add times, it is easier to get discouraged when you are not "on time." Don't set yourself up to "fail" by adding times.

I don't keep track of time spent on each subject for the children, except Joylyn (she is in high school now). Time doesn't matter until high school. By then, they keep track of their own time in their time log. When they are younger, I just make sure every assignment is done and the children have mastered the assignment. If they have it done and they know it, good on to the next thing. If the work is not done, sloppy or the children obviously don't know it, back we go again until they do it right and have it mastered.

Anyway, that is what we do here. Hope it helps.
