I finished The Birth House last night. I think that's the fastest I've ever read a book.
So to finish up my review...
The conflict between the Doctor and granny midwife continues a bit until the midwife disappears one evening. Dora immediately knows what has happened to her.
At this point in the book the focus changes to Dora's life. Her struggles as a young newlywed, her desire to become a Mother, and eventually discovering where she is meant to be. She attends to a few women and has her own run-ins with the Doctor.
My overall thoughts on the book:
The story was a good one, kept me reading it that's for sure. I enjoyed reading about the remedies the granny midwife used and passed on to Dora. The old wive's tales that were believed at the time as true were humerous.
On the other hand, I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include more births. Seeing that the novel is titled The Birth House, you envision pages filled with stories from a birth house. Instead you read about the life of Dora Rare and the drama surrounding her. It's not until the very end of the book that Dora shares about her house becoming the birth house and how she was able to help women.
